23.02.2020 Case study: Giant Tumor

The volunteer team of German doctors here for the week have arrived!  They will be performing pro bono hernia repair and fixing club feet.  In addition to these planned cases, there were a few more picked up.  One particular case I would like to share. I saw this patient in the previous week and suggested her to come back when the team comes to operate (having realized this would be no operation for me to tackle on my own).  She had a document that stated it was some form of inguinal cyst on the right.  Knowing that one of the doctors (a pediatric surgeon here for the hernia repair patients) may be my best help yet, I had her put on the surgery list.  The examination showed a large tumor that completely filled her right labia that in turn caused it to hang to nearly her knees.  We removed a giant tumorous mass and are awaiting to hear back from the university pathology department regarding its histology.  The pictures are of a medical nature and may be considered quite graphic.  So for anyone not to keen to see an oversized tumorous mass of the labia please avoid scrolling further than this first picture!

Morning rounds

Sensitive pictures...

1,4 kg was the weight of this tumor. The aetiology is a mystery, but it has been sent to the university hospital pathology department (first time attempt to get histology).  Aside from a solid mass this tumor also had many cystic like sacs.  The gynecologist in me would say it was an abundance of Bartholini cysts but aside from one, they were diffusely spread thoughout the tissue.  The patient came for follow up several days later.  We were very pleased at the wound healing. I am anxiously awaiting the results of this.
